Today, the globe mourns the departure of Shahzada Dawood, an extraordinary Pakistani whose commercial and charitable ventures have significantly shaped our society.
Dawood, together with his 19-year-old son, Suleman, tragically lost their lives in the Atlantic Ocean, alongside three other brave souls – British entrepreneur and explorer, Hamish Harding, French underwater adventurer and Titanic expert, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and Stockton Rush, CEO of OceanGate who was the owner of the submarine that the group was aboard when they met their untimely end.
Dawood harbored a deep fascination for all aspects related to the legendary ship, the Titanic – which sank after colliding with an iceberg in 1912.
This year, on Father’s Day, he arranged a unique expedition for himself and his son, Suleiman, to journey to the frigid depths of the Atlantic Ocean to witness the wreckage up close.
Their shared passion led them to their tragic fate. An hour after descending, communication was lost with the submarine, the RMS Titan.
The world held its breath as search and rescue teams sprung into action. Unfortunately, the US Coast Guard eventually reported the devastating news that the submarine had imploded due to a “dramatic loss of the pressure chamber,” causing the demise of all aboard.
In an issued statement, Dawood’s family extended their gratitude to the rescue teams and shared their “deep sorrow” for the “unthinkable loss” they experienced.
Dawood’s business career was immensely successful, with him making his mark at the Engro Corporation, where he served as a director for two decades, spending the last two years as vice chairman. Born in Rawalpindi in 1975, Dawood was widely admired for his business prowess and had given several talks at the World Economic Forum and the United Nations.
Yet, it is his philanthropic endeavors that have truly left an indelible imprint on numerous individuals, many of whom he never personally met, but who were deeply touched by his efforts. Even Engro’s statement on his sudden passing recognized him as a strong proponent of corporate social responsibility, and highlighted his firm belief that Engro “should lead the charge in addressing the nation’s most urgent issues.”
