A Historic Feat in South African Cricket
Eighteen-year-old Kwena Maphaka has etched his name in South African cricket history by becoming the country’s youngest-ever ODI debutant. The landmark achievement took place at Newlands, Cape Town, where Maphaka received his maiden ODI cap during the second match of the ongoing series against Pakistan. This milestone follows his earlier feat of being the youngest South African to debut in T20 Internationals just four months ago.
Breaking a Long-Standing Record
Maphaka’s ODI debut, at the age of 18 years and 255 days, broke the record previously held by Victor Mpitsang. Mpitsang, a fast bowler, had debuted at 18 years and 314 days against the West Indies in 1999. The only other South African to make his ODI debut before the age of 19 was the spinner Paul Adams, who represented the Proteas against England in 1996 at the age of 18 years and 364 days.
Youngest ODI Debutants for South Africa:

- 18y 314d – Victor Mpitsang vs West Indies, 1999
- 18y 364d – Paul Adams vs England, 1996
A Remarkable Journey
Maphaka’s achievement is a continuation of what has already been a dream year for the teenager. Earlier in 2024, he became the youngest player to debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL), turning out for the Mumbai Indians at 17 years and 354 days. His talent and potential were further highlighted during the ICC U19 World Cup, where he played a key role for South Africa’s youth team.
Recognition in All Formats
Adding to his accolades, Maphaka’s ODI debut comes just a day after being named in South Africa’s Test squad for a crucial two-match series against Pakistan. The series carries significant importance as a single victory would secure South Africa’s place in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final.
A Promising Future
Maphaka’s meteoric rise has captured the attention of the cricketing world. His blend of skill, composure, and adaptability across formats has marked him as a player to watch. With milestones already achieved in T20Is, ODIs, and the IPL, and a potential Test debut on the horizon, the teenager’s journey appears destined for even greater heights. South African cricket fans can look forward to an exciting future led by this prodigious talent.
