{"id":692,"date":"2026-05-12T03:50:04","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T03:50:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailypakistannews.com\/?p=692"},"modified":"2026-05-12T03:50:04","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T03:50:04","slug":"under-threat-uk-pm-starmer-vows-to-prove-doubters-wrong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailypakistannews.com\/?p=692","title":{"rendered":"Under-threat UK PM Starmer vows to prove \u2018doubters\u2019 wrong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>LONDON: Embattled British Prime Minister Keir Starmer came out fighting Monday, vowing to prove his \u201cdoubters\u201d wrong as he sought to quell a growing threat to his leadership following disastrous election results.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Starmer pledged his ruling Labour party would be \u201cbetter\u201d and bolder as he tried to convince angry and restless lawmakers to back him in a crunch speech designed to reset his flagging premiership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that people are frustrated by the state of Britain, frustrated by politics, and some people frustrated with me,\u201d Starmer said during an address in central London.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know I have my doubters, and I know I need to prove them wrong, and I will,\u201d added Starmer, who returned Labour to power after 14 years of Conservative rule in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>He has swerved from one policy misstep to another since, and is engulfed in a scandal over the appointment, and sacking, of Peter Mandelson as UK ambassador to Washington, after revelations about the envoy\u2019s ties to the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister has failed to spur economic growth as British citizens continue to feel the effects of a years-long cost-of-living pinch, but has been praised for resisting US President Donald Trump over Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Voters issued a damning indictment of Starmer\u2019s 22 months in power in local elections Thursday, which saw huge gains for the hard-right Reform UK party and left-wing populists the Greens at Labour\u2019s expense.<\/p>\n<p>Starmer\u2019s party lost control of the devolved Welsh parliament for the first time and failed to make up ground on the pro-independence Scottish National Party (SNP) in the devolved parliament in Edinburgh.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON: Embattled British Prime Minister Keir Starmer came out fighting Monday, vowing to prove his \u201cdoubters\u201d wrong as he sought to quell a growing threat to his leadership following disastrous election results.
