Israel deported on Sunday two foreign activists<\/a> seized from a Gaza-bound flotilla, in what a rights group representing them described as a \u201cpunitive attack\u201d on a civilian mission.<\/p>\n

Saif Abu Keshek, a Spanish national of Palestinian origin, and Brazilian Thiago Avila were among dozens of activists aboard a flotilla intercepted<\/a> by the Israeli navy in international waters off the coast of Greece on April 30.<\/p>\n

The pair were seized by Israeli forces and brought to Israel for questioning, while the others were taken to the Greek island of Crete and released.<\/p>\n

\u201cSaif Abu Keshek and Thiago Avila, from the provocation flotilla, were deported today from Israel\u201d following an investigation, the Israeli foreign ministry posted on X on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Israel would \u201cnot allow any breach\u201d of the blockade on Gaza, it added.<\/p>\n

Spain, Brazil and the United Nations had all called for the men\u2019s swift release.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, an Israeli court rejected an appeal<\/a> contesting the pair\u2019s detention.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom their abduction in international waters to their unlawful detention in total isolation and the ill-treatment they were subjected to, the Israeli authorities\u2019 actions were a punitive attack on a purely civilian mission,\u201d Adalah, the rights group that represented the pair, said after their release.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe use of detention and interrogation against activists and human rights defenders is an unacceptable attempt to suppress global solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n

The flotilla had set sail from France, Spain and Italy with the aim of breaking Israel\u2019s blockade of Gaza and delivering humanitarian aid to the war-ravaged Palestinian territory.<\/p>\n

The Global Sumud Flotilla\u2019s first voyage last year was also intercepted<\/a> by Israeli forces off the coasts of Egypt and Gaza.<\/p>\n

Israel controls all entry points into Gaza, which has been under an Israeli blockade since 2007.<\/p>\n
