WASHINGTON\/CAIRO: Relative calm prevailed around the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> early on Sunday after days of sporadic flare-ups, as the United States waited for \u200cIran\u2019s response to its latest proposals to end more than two months of fighting and begin peace talks.<\/strong><\/p>\n

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio<\/a> said on Friday that Washington expected a response within hours. But there have been no signs of movement from Tehran on the proposal, which would formally end the war before talks on more contentious issues, including Iran\u2019s nuclear program.<\/p>\n

Rubio met Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al\u2011Thani <\/a>in Miami on \u200bSaturday and discussed the need to continue working together \u201cto deter threats and promote stability and security across the Middle East,\u201d the State Department said in a statement, \u200bwhich did not mention Iran.<\/p>\n

A reporter for French broadcaster LCI, Margot Haddad, said on Saturday that Trump had told her in a brief \u2060interview that he still expected to find out Iran\u2019s answer \u201cvery soon\u201d.<\/p>\n

Qatari tanker approaches vital strait<\/strong><\/p>\n

With US President Donald Trump<\/a> due to visit China this week, there has been mounting pressure to \u200bdraw a line under the war, which has ignited a global energy crisis and poses a growing threat to the world economy.<\/p>\n

A Qatari tanker of liquefied natural gas was sailing toward the \u200bstrait on Saturday en route to Pakistan, according to LSEG shipping data, a move sources said was approved by Iran to build confidence with Qatar and Pakistan<\/a>, both mediators in the war.<\/p>\n

If completed, it would mark the first transit of a Qatari LNG vessel<\/a> through the strait since the U.S. and Israel started the war on February 28.<\/p>\n

Tehran has largely blocked non-Iranian shipping through the narrow strait, which before the war carried \u200bone-fifth of the world\u2019s oil supply.<\/p>\n

Recent days have seen the biggest flare-ups in fighting in and around the strait since a ceasefire began a month ago, and the United Arab \u200bEmirates<\/a> came under renewed attack on Friday.<\/p>\n

On Friday, there were sporadic clashes between Iranian forces and US vessels in the strait, Iran\u2019s semi-official Fars news agency reported.<\/p>\n

The U.S. military said it struck two Iran-linked \u200cvessels attempting \u2060to enter an Iranian port, forcing them to turn back.<\/p>\n

A bulk carrier reported being struck by a projectile northeast of Doha, the UK Maritime Trade Operations<\/a> said on Sunday. A small fire was extinguished, with no casualties or environmental impact, UKMTO said. Authorities were investigating the source of the projectile.<\/p>\n

Vessels whose states follow U.S. sanctions against Iran will face difficulties crossing the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Army Spokesperson Mohammad Akraminia<\/a> said on Sunday, according to semi-official Tasnim news agency.<\/p>\n

Iranian lawmakers have said they are drafting a bill to formalise Iran\u2019s management of the strait, \u200bwith clauses including forbidden passage to vessels of \u201chostile \u200bstates\u201d.<\/p>\n

Ceasefire holding despite flare-ups, Trump says<\/strong><\/p>\n

Washington \u2060imposed a blockade on Iranian vessels last month. But a CIA assessment indicated Iran would not suffer severe economic pressure from a US blockade for about another four months, according to a US official familiar with the matter, raising questions about Trump\u2019s leverage over Tehran in a conflict \u200bthat has been unpopular with voters and US allies.<\/p>\n

A senior intelligence official characterised as false the \u201cclaims\u201d about the CIA analysis, which was first \u200breported by the Washington \u2060Post.<\/p>\n

Trump said on Thursday the ceasefire was holding despite the flare-ups, while Iran accused the U.S. of breaching it.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery time a diplomatic solution is on the table, the U.S. opts for a reckless military adventure,\u201d Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi <\/a>said on Friday.<\/p>\n

The US has found little international support in the conflict. After meeting Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni<\/a> on Friday, Rubio questioned why Italy and other \u2060allies were \u200bnot backing Washington\u2019s efforts to reopen the strait, warning of a dangerous precedent if Tehran were allowed to \u200bcontrol an international waterway.<\/p>\n
