TENERIFE: The cruise ship hit by a deadly hantavirus outbreak arrived early on Sunday near the Port of Granadilla in Tenerife, Reuters footage showed, where it will \u200banchor for the evacuation of the passengers and some of the crew.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The \u200cpassengers, none of whom has displayed signs of infection, will be tested by Spanish health authorities to ensure they remain asymptomatic and then transported to land in small boats, according to \u200bSpanish officials.<\/p>\n

Sealed-off buses will then take the passengers to the Spanish island\u2019s \u200bmain airport about 10 minutes away, where they will board planes \u2060heading to their respective countries.<\/p>\n

All passengers on the luxury cruise ship MV Hondius \u200bare considered high-risk contacts as a precautionary measure, Europe\u2019s public health agency said late on \u200bSaturday as part of its rapid scientific advice.<\/p>\n

The evacuation is expected to begin between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. (0630-0700 GMT), according to Spanish authorities.<\/p>\n

Spanish nationals are set to disembark first with other \u200bnationalities to follow in groups, government officials said on Saturday. Thirty crew members will \u200bremain on board and sail to the Netherlands where the ship will be disinfected.<\/p>\n

The ship left \u200cfor \u2060Spain on Wednesday from the coast of Cape Verde after the World Health Organization and European Union asked the country to manage the evacuation of passengers after the hantavirus outbreak was detected.<\/p>\n

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus arrived on Saturday evening in Tenerife \u200bin the Canary Islands, \u200balongside Spain\u2019s interior \u2060and health ministers and its minister for territorial policy, to coordinate the arrival of the ship.<\/p>\n

The WHO said on Friday that eight \u200bpeople had fallen ill, including three who died – a Dutch \u200bcouple and \u2060a German national. Six of these people are confirmed to have contracted the virus, with another two suspected cases, the WHO has said.<\/p>\n

Hantavirus is usually spread by rodents \u2060but \u200bcan in rare cases be transmitted person-to-person. The WHO \u200bhas said the risk to the wider global population is low, but the risk to passengers and crew \u200bon the ship is moderate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
