Preliminary examination suggests sexual abuse; police detain man nominated by parents
Hyderabad Tragedy: 13-Year-Old Girl’s Suicide Highlights Alleged Harassment and Social Media Abuse
Hyderabad:
In a deeply tragic incident, a 13-year-old girl from Sanghar district, identified as Urooj Kashmiri, ended her life on December 2 by hanging herself from a ceiling hook at her home. Preliminary investigations suggest that the young girl, a seventh-grade student, may have been driven to this drastic step due to harassment and a distressing social media post, according to local authorities and medical reports.
Dr. Fazal Mehmood Shah, the Medical Superintendent of the Taluka Hospital where her body was brought for examination, stated on Tuesday that the initial findings point to emotional distress as the possible reason for her suicide. He noted that a final and conclusive postmortem report is awaited to confirm the details.
Alleged Harassment and Social Media Post
Reports indicate that the situation escalated after Urooj discovered that a young man, identified as Mehrab Khan Khoso, had allegedly shared her photo on social media. Urooj’s family claims that this act of public humiliation pushed her into despair.
According to the girl’s mother, Khoso had been persistently harassing Urooj, often troubling her on her way to and from school. On the day prior to the tragic incident, Khoso reportedly sent a message through Urooj’s younger sister, Kainat, informing Urooj that he had uploaded her photograph online.
This incident, coupled with the family’s inability to pursue legal action due to financial constraints, left the young girl feeling hopeless. Her parents, residents of Sana Roshan Colony in Tando Adam taluka, firmly believe that the social media post was the primary cause of their daughter’s untimely death.
Police Action and Ongoing Investigation
DSP Dr. Muhammad Moosa Abro confirmed that the B-Section police have detained Khoso for questioning. However, no formal FIR has been registered at this stage. The DSP stated that Khoso claimed to be a friend of Urooj, a statement refuted by her family, who allege that he persistently harassed their daughter.
“Further investigation is underway,” the DSP added, assuring that the authorities are working to uncover the truth behind this heartbreaking case.
A Cry for Justice
This tragedy sheds light on the pressing need to address issues of harassment, online abuse, and their devastating impacts, particularly on young and vulnerable individuals. The family’s financial struggles underline the systemic challenges that prevent many victims from seeking justice.
This incident serves as a somber reminder of the responsibility society bears in ensuring the safety of children and holding individuals accountable for their actions, both online and offline.
