PTI’s Amir Dogar said an agreement has been reached between SIC and Speaker over chairmanship of standing committees
ISLAMABAD:
The long-standing debate over who should chair standing committees in the National Assembly has been resolved as the government offered to the opposition alliance the chairmanship of 18 standing committees hitherto chaired by them during the 2018-2023 government tenure.
Interestingly, the opposition alliance has agreed to take only 11 of the 18 committees presented. Of these, 10 will be headed by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), while the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) will head one committee.
The standing committees given to the opposition are as follows:
Finance
Commerce
Foreign Affairs
SAFRON (States and Frontier Regions)
Water Resources
Religious Affairs
Railways
National Heritage
Law and Justice
Maritime Affairs
Industry and Production
Housing
Human Rights
Food Protection
Federal Education
Aviation
Board of Investment
Anti-Drugs
Agreement Has Been Met on Committee Headships
PTI leader Amir Dogar while confirming the news said an agreement has been met among SIC and the speaker of the national assembly about how the committee headship is being distributed. According to him, “The Speaker shared with the House a list of all 18 committees which during the previous government were under the chairpersonship of the opposition.
Under this deal, the opposition alliance will head 11 committees, of which 10 will be chaired by PTI and one by JUI-F.
This is a major step in making parliamentary cooperation between the government and opposition work in effective oversight of key legislative issues.
The new leadership distribution is expected to streamline decision-making processes and improve governance in key sectors.
