PPP chairman assures JUI-F chief he would raise the matter with the government
Islamabad: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari held an important meeting with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Wednesday. Accompanied by a PPP delegation, Bilawal visited Rehman’s residence to deliberate on pressing political issues, with a special focus on the Madrasah Registration Bill.
The bill, which has been passed by both houses of Parliament, awaits the president’s signature to become law. The delay in its approval has sparked concerns, particularly from the JUI-F leadership.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman Voices Concerns
During the meeting, Maulana Fazlur Rehman expressed frustration over the hold-up. “Why has the president not signed the Madrasah Registration Bill despite its approval by Parliament?” he questioned. His remarks highlighted a growing dissatisfaction with the perceived inaction from the Presidency.
Rehman emphasized that the delay undermines the legislative process and demanded an explanation. “Is the Presidency above Parliament, blocking a bill that has already been passed by both houses?” he asked, underscoring the need for clarity on the matter.
Bilawal Bhutto’s Assurance
Responding to the JUI-F chief’s concerns, Bilawal assured his party’s continued support. “I will talk to the government and inquire about the reasons for the delay,” he pledged. Bilawal also reaffirmed the PPP’s commitment to resolving the issue promptly and ensuring the bill’s approval aligns with the legislative intent.
Hafiz Hamdullah’s Criticism
JUI-F leader Hafiz Hamdullah also criticized the delay, noting that the Madrasah Registration Bill is part of the 26th Constitutional Amendment. He questioned what was preventing its final approval. “What is the obstacle now, and who is behind it?” Hamdullah asked, pointing to potential political resistance.
Hamdullah further urged Bilawal to involve his father, Asif Ali Zardari, in advocating for the bill. “If Bilawal acts decisively, it will uphold Parliament’s supremacy. Otherwise, tougher measures may be justified,” he added.
JUI-F’s Ultimatum
The meeting concluded with a warning from the JUI-F leadership. Maulana Fazlur Rehman announced that if the president does not sign the bill by December 7, his party will initiate a protest movement on December 8 in Peshawar. Rehman made it clear that further delays could compel the JUI-F to adopt stronger measures to ensure the supremacy of Parliament.
A Test for Political Unity
The discussions between the PPP and JUI-F highlight a critical moment in Pakistan’s political landscape. The unresolved status of the Madrasah Registration Bill raises questions about the functioning of democratic institutions and the balance of power between Parliament and the Presidency.
As the December 7 deadline approaches, the outcome will likely shape the political narrative in Pakistan, with the PPP and JUI-F under increasing pressure to act decisively.
